It’s Wednesday again, hump day, sigh. For some reason this week especially I see people dragging their feet, and feeling low on energy. Myself included! Whatever it is, let’s overcome it together. I’m giving you a kick in the pants through your computer today. Telling you to pick up those feet, and get your heart pumping! More energy and improved moods are sure to follow. Today, wherever you are, try taking the stairs. It’s so simple! Walking up stairs burns more calories than walking on a flat surface, improves your stability, helps to strengthen the quads, hamstrings, calves, glutes, and increases your heart rate to promote cardiovascular health. Now this may seem obvious, but so many people avoid the stairs and opt to take an elevator or escalator these days.
For the average 150lb person to climb the stairs for a total of 10 mins while carrying a bag, purse, backpack, brief case, laptop bag, whatever…burns approximately 62 calories. On top of that, general stair climbing, around your house, subway, or your apartment building, the average person burns approximately 56 calories per 10 mins. Do you see what I’m getting at here folks, these are things we do normally in our day! If we just put a little extra effort into it can all add up and make a big difference to our waistlines, cardiovascular systems, and our overall health. So put some bounce in your step on this fine hump day, and take the stairs!
