I know there has been a lot of hype lately surrounding superfoods, so I always make sure to do my research before jumping in and buying a big bag of the latest supplement or superfood powders out there. That being said, my latest obsession is a supplement called red Maca. Maca is a native plant of Peru, and has been used for centuries to keep warriors healthy and strong. Red Maca specifically is used to heighten immunity, and is a powerful adaptogen which helps to restore balance to many bodily systems, and provide energy without over stimulating your body like caffeine can. Maca has been shown to have benefits in both men and women when consumed on a regular basis, however red Maca in specific is known to settle hormone levels in women. It’s quite possible that it’s just a more noticeable effect in women because our hormone spikes are more obvious themselves. To testify to this, I have been using Maca consistently for over a month now, and even on the days when my P Tracker Lite says hormone hell is breaking loose in my body, I’ve been surprisingly calm. So here’s my favorite way to use Maca after a month’s experience using this superfood.
Balancing Blueberry Smoothie
1 heaping handful of spinach
1 heaping handful of frozen blueberries
1 tsp Red Maca
1 tbs of raw cocoa (known to elevate moods and who doesn’t love the flavor of chocolate!)
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
Throw all ingredients in a blender and voila!
