First off, I hope everyone had an amazing holiday season! I’ve been traveling all over the place this holiday, Bermuda, Halifax, and tonight on to Saskatoon. Random, I know. Despite my hectic travel schedule my holiday seemed to be especially relaxing, balanced, and joyful this year.
It wasn’t that there was one exciting event that made it so great, I just managed to hold onto that delicate balance that allowed me to enjoy everything, and everyone around me. My secret…well I’d like to say there was one, but there wasn’t.
I can say though, that I read a book this holiday season that changed my way of thinking vastly. I admittedly don’t usually find time to read for the enjoyment of reading, so I was surprised when I started to read, “Maps to Ecstasy” by Gabrielle Roth, and found I couldn’t put it down!
A client of mine, whom I’ve been seeing for just around 6 months now, has always ranted and raved about the work of Gabrielle Roth. Finally just before the break she gave me both of Roth’s books as a Christmas gift. I figured I had no excuse not to learn more about this topic my client seemed so interested in.
Gabrielle Roth was a classically trained dancer who taught dance throughout her life to make ends meet. While teaching she observed many different demographics from young children, seniors, to the mentally ill. Throughout her journey she worked with shaman, psychologists, practiced yoga, and meditation to try and find patterns, or a common thread in the movements. Almost like reading tea leaves, Roth began to read bodies. Roth observed that no matter what issue people were dealing with, be it schizophrenia, cancer, depression, everyone found some kind of healing or “ecstasy” through movement.
I could go on and on…Needless to say, I am passionate about movement and understanding the human body, and Roth’s book opened my eyes to a whole other way of looking at movement and happiness! I highly recommend you read it for yourself. The book is available here!
I hope everyone has a fun filled New Year’s Eve tonight, cause tomorrow it’s resolution making time 😉
