Happy Canada Day fellow Canadians! This weekend is synonymous with drinking beer, eating as much BBQ as you can, and lazing around in a lawn chair all day. This is the sign of a true Canada Day eh? I’m as patriotic as the next person, but I’ll be damned if all my hard work in Pilates class all week goes completely to waste! Here are a few ideas for healthy and happy ideas for your Canada Day long weekend.
Maple Roasted Pecans
A True Canadian Treat!
1/4 cup pure maple syrup (I use B grade)
3 cups raw pecans
1 Tbs coconut oil (or olive oil if that’s what you’ve got lying around)
1 tsp grated fresh ginger
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp chili pepper powder
2 tsp cinnamon
a pinch of sea salt
Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place aluminum foil on a large baking pan and spread raw pecans around until evenly distributed.
Step 2: Mix all other ingredients together in a food processor or jar and blend.
Step 3: Pour mixture over pecans and toss until evenly coated.
Step 4: Bake nuts for about 15mins, watching closely!! You do not want to burn these, trust me!
Step 5: Allow to cool, pack in your bag, or picnic basket and enjoy! These are a sweet mapley treat lake side, a great addition to any BBQ, or a nice snack while watching some fireworks pop off on July 1st!
Speaking of picnic, I was able to catch up with Gillian Young of Battle and the Bites this week for a quaint little picnic in Trinity Bellwoods Park the other day. We finally taste tested the new clean-eats resto on the block, Feel Good Guru. This all natural take-out spot is conveniently located on the south side of Queen Street across from Trinity Bellwoods park, supplying the perfect healthy picnic foods. Although it’s slightly pricey, the quality of the ingredients is fantastic, and it’s a quick alternative to Fresh. We had a mix of all the amazing salad choices, and Gillian supplied lots of tasty kombucha! If you’re staying in the city for the long weekend, Feel Good Guru is definitely a great way to celebrate your Canada Day!
