How many cups of coffee do you drink in a day? Sometimes, that second (or third, or fourth) afternoon coffee is unavoidable, and it usually comes along with a wicked craving for something sweet. Suddenly, that afternoon coffee is never enough — we get used to pairing it with something dense in carbohydrates. Why do you think they put those brownies on the counter at your favourite coffee spot?
Though nothing goes together like sweet treats and a cup of joe, it spells disaster for your digestion, and will lead to future sugar cravings. To learn more about this topic, check out Joyous Health’s latest article.
If, like me, you’re trying to break that vicious afternoon cycle, then I have the perfect recipe for cutting back on caffeine while amping up your energy levels. This protein packed smoothie, with a little kick from espresso and cocoa, is great before an afternoon workout, or to keep you from falling asleep at your desk!
- 2 cups almond milk
- 2-3 pitted large Medjool dates, to taste
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened Dutch-processed cocoa powder
- 3 tablespoons hulled hemp seeds
- 1/2 cup Brazil nuts, soaked for 30 mins (soaking is optional, but assists with digestion)
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 single shot of espresso, or 1/4 cup of brewed coffee
- 4 large ice cubes
Health Tip: Brazil nuts are nature’s supplement for anyone who exercises. These large nute (yup, I said it) are packed full of selenium (which translates to great skin), and minerals such as copper, magnesium, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc. Copper helps prevent anemia and bone weakness (osteoporosis). Key for muscle recovery!
Add all ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until super smooth.
